The Smith College basketball team cruised to an 80-53 win over Wheaton College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Pioneers improve to 18-5 overall and 11-3 in league play, while the Lyons fall to 7-16, 2-12. Smith has now won 10 of their last 11 games.


SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) led all players with her 11th double-double of the season of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Junior guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) added 19 points, shooting 3-of-8 from beyond-the-arc. 
  • Junior forward Stephanie Foukaris (Nicosia, Cyprus/Pascal English School Nicosia) came off the bench and finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

WHEATON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wheaton was led by 10 points from sophomore Natalie Wind, who finished 4-of-8 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the free-throw line.
  • Senior Oppie Morris chipped in nine points, while Emily Cuthbertson and Chelsea Rairdon each had seven points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied at 4-4 with 7:45 remaining in the quarter, the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run and carried a 22-9 lead into the second period. During the run, Bondi and Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) each knocked down treys and Guest-Pritchett added four points.

The teams played an even second quarter as the Pioneers headed into halftime with the 39-26 advantage.

Marquez and Holland opened the third period with back-to-back buckets and Guest-Pritchett's layup at the 5:06 mark gave Smith their largest lead of the quarter at 50-30.

The visitors carried the momentum into the fourth quarter, outscoring Wheaton 19-9 in the final frame.
