Lacrosse Tops Southern Vermont, 18-1

The Smith College lacrosse team tied their season high in goals scored as the Pioneers cruised to an 18-1 win over Southern Vermont College Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Smith improves to 4-1, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-4.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS

  • It was a balanced scoring effort for the Pioneers as Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), Liz Lee, and Wakana Ninohira each finished with three goals.
  • Senior Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) recorded one goal, two assists, and four draw controls.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) played the first half and was replaced by junior Moira Anderson (Rumford, R.I./Providence Country Day School) who made two stops.


SOUTHERN VERMONT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alex Safford scored the only goal of the game for Southern Vermont.
  • Madi Carr led the team with three ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • Kelsey Carrera stopped 13 shots for the Mountaineers in 51:50.


HOW IT HAPPENED
Smith took control of the game from the opening draw as sophomore Bella Ferraro scored twice and Harris, Lee, and Myran each found the back of the net to build a 5-0 lead just 3:50 into the contest. The Pioneers controlled all aspects of the game and put six more on the board and headed into halftime with an 11-0 advantage.

Harris continued the momentum in the second stanza, opening with a score 26 seconds in.
After three more goals for the Pioneers, Alex Safford got the Mountaineers on the board at the 14:54 mark of the second half. Smith continued their dominance and closed the game with four more goals for the 18-1 victory.


GAME NOTES

  • The Pioneers are now 16-5 in non-conference games under head coach Katie Moore.
  • First-years Liz Lee and Wakena Ninohira scored a career-high three goals in the victory.
  • Senior Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) is three points away from 100 in her career.
