In their final non-conference game of the season, the Smith College lacrosse team fell to Connecticut College by a 17-11 score Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers are now 7-6 on the year, while Connecticut College improves to 4-10. Today's game was the first time Smith had played a NESCAC opponent since the 2006 season.Â
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) led the offensive effort for the Pioneers with three goals, one assist.
- Seniors Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) each posted two goals and two assists.
- Junior Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) added two tallies, six ground balls, five draw controls, and five caused turnovers.
- Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished with 11 saves.
CONN. COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior midfielder Jamie Navoni was unstoppable for the Camels, scoring a career-high 11 goals while adding two assists to bring her season total to 51 tallies.
- Sophomores Megan Corcoran and Clara Bisson each posted two goals.
- Junior defender Erin Martin finished with nine ground balls, five caused turnovers, and two draw controls.
- Senior goalkeeper Megan Mullin made eight stops in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harris wasted no time as she put the Pioneers on the board just 18 seconds into the game on a feed from Hamilton. The Camels responded with 23:58 on the clock as Navoni and Bryce McCLure connected before Biggs made it a 2-1 Smith advantage. The two teams exchanged goals before Connecticut College would go on to score four of the next five goals for a 6-4 lead with 7:53 remaining in the half. Leading 8-5, Connecticut College had a chance to score, but stifling defense from Smith caused a turnover and Hamilton found the back of the net with 15 second remaining in the half to cut the lead to 8-6.
Myran opened the second period with an unassisted goal before Navoni took a pass from Hannah Lombard to beat Price and give Connecticut College a 9-7 lead. Just two minutes later, first-year Kaitlin Chiu converted her opportunity to bring the home squad withing one, 9-8. The Camels strung together five consecutive goals to claim a 14-8 advantage with 17:31 remaining in the game. During the scoring run for Connecticut College, Navoni and Corcoran each found the back of the net twice and Kate Bermingham netted her first of the game. Smith and Connecticut College would go back and forth for the next six goals as the visitors came out on top, 17-11.
