NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College field hockey team put forth a balanced scoring effort to defeat the University of Maine Farmington, 5-1, in the opening game of the 2nd Annual Caryl Newhof Classic Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers begin 1-0 for the third consecutive season.

Anna Ballou (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and sent it past the netminder.

NOTABLE
- The Pioneers held a commanding 13-4 advantage in shots on goal while also leading the corner battle 9-3.
- Smith goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) made her first collegiate start and recorded three saves.
- UMF netminder Grace DiMarco made eight stops in the loss.
- With the win, Smith now leads the all-time series 2-0.
