NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 2-0 loss to Carleton College Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers move to 0-1-0, while the Knights earned their first win and now stand at 1-0-1.

32' | CARLETON |Â Annika Martensson
 took a free kick from 25 yards out. She nearly notched her second goal of the season but it hit the crossbar. The ball ricocheted just inside the six-yard box, allowing a Nora Mertz header for the 1-0 lead.Â
74' | CARLETON | The Knights secured the win as Julia Kenney's corner kick went through the Smith defense. Hannah Hemmerly controlled the ball and blasted a shot to the top of the net for her first career goal.Â
NOTABLE
- Smith took 11 shots compared to nine for the Knights.
- Each team had five corner opportunities.
- Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial), Maggie Boyle (Milford, Mass./Milford), and Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain)Â made their first collegiate start for the Pioneers.Â
- Falkenberg made three saves, while Anna Roethler posted four stops in the shutout.Â
- This was the first-ever meeting between these two teams.Â
