AMHERST, Mass. - After a deadlocked first half, Amherst struck twice to fuel them towards a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Smith College soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. The Mammoths now improve to 4-1 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 5-3 overall.
HOW THEY SCORED
48' - AMHERST - The first goal of the game came from a cross that was tipped off a Smith defender's head, landing at Caleigh Plaut's feet on the edge of the box. Plaut's shot was lofted just over the goalkeeper's hands, putting the home squad up 1-0.
72' - AMHERST - The second goal of the match came from a strong push down the right sideline by Sloan Askins who then crossed to the near post where Alexa Juarez struck the ball through to the far corner past the goalie.
NOTABLE
- The Pioneers finished with five total shots with only three on frame and one corner.
- Amherst peppered the Smith defense, posting 20 shots (10 on goal) to go along with six corners.
- Smith's Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) recorded eight saves on the day over the course of 78 minutes.
- Goalkeeper Julia Donovan (Waltham, Mass./Ridgewood) made her second appearance of the season, playing in the final 12 minutes.
- The Pioneers move to 12-14-3 all-time against the Mammoths.
- Smith's best chance of the day came in the second half from a well struck ball by senior Pamela Larkin (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) roughly 35 yards out which collided with the crossbar.
- Sophomore Ewka Varney (Portland, Maine/Deering) tested the Amherst defense with two shots on goal for the day.
