NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team was unable to withstand a second-half rally from No. 16 MIT in a 4-2 loss to the Engineers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon. With the win, MIT improves to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play while the Pioneers drop to 5-4-0, 1-1-0.
HOW THEY SCORED
13' - MIT - After a Smith foul, Emily Berzolla's free kick from 25 yards cleared the wall of defenders and bounced just in front of the Pioneer goalie and over her outreached arms into the net.
24' - MIT - Sophia Struckman beat her defender and ripped a shot 30 yards that found the back of the goal.
33' - SMITH - Krissy Williams' (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain) free kick to the right of the net was placed perfectly for
Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H./Keene) to run on and one-touch it into the upper left of the net.
35' - SMITH - Peyton McBride (Manchester, N.H./Goffstown) carried the ball down the left sideline and cut into goal. She cut in towards the goal and sent a pass across the cage to
Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain) who placed knocked it in to the lower right corner.
79' - MIT - An unsuccessful clear by the Smith defense allowed Karenna Groff to gain control of the ball at the top of the box and fire a shot to the top of the net.
82' - MIT - Shannon Miller buried a shot that slid in to the lower right corner of the cage past the diving Smith keeper.
NOTABLE
- Bazzano scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year while Sullivan netted her first of the year.
- First year goalkeeper Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) was outstanding in goal, recording a career-high 12 saves.
- MIT keeper Lily Mueller made five stops in net.
- The Engineers out shot Smith, 28-12, and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
- The two goals scored by the Pioneers were the most MIT has allowed in a win this season.
- Smith still leads the all-time series 19-14-1.
