Hagen, Freeman Lead Volleyball to Split with Wheaton & Plymouth State

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -  Sophomore Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) totaled 23 kills and junior Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) finished with 45 assists as the Smith College volleyball team split a tri-match with Wheaton College and Plymouth State University. The Lyons took the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match 25-22, 25-15, and 25-16 and the Pioneers prevailed 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) in the final match of the day over the Panthers. Smith is now 2-13 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.

  • Sophomore Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) registered seven kills and two blocks.
  • Hagen totaled seven kills and three aces.
  • Freeman posted a team-best 17 assists while junior Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) recorded 14 digs.
  • The Pioneers hit .043 compared to .248 for the Lyons.
  • Wheaton improves to 28-17 all-time against Smith.

  • Hagen hammered down a season-high 17 kills in the victory to go along with two blocks.
  • Johnson finished with 11 kills, hitting .391 with three blocks.
  • Freeman totaled a career-high 28 assists and junior Helena Wiatrowski (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) led the defensive effort with 11 digs.
  • Smith hit .224 for the match compared to Plymouth State's .122 hitting percentage.
  • The Pioneers improve to 5-8 against the Panthers.
