Strong Second Half Lifts No. 19 MIT Over Smith Field Hockey

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.Two goals midway through the second half helped propel the nationally-ranked No. 19 MIT field hockey team to a 3-1 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. The Engineers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action while the Pioneers move to 5-4, 2-1.

HOW THEY SCORED

0:49 - MIT - Bailey Tregoning intercepted the ball at midfield and eventually sent a pass from the far side to Goetz. She then shot the ball between a defender and Smith goalie Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) for the score.

4:52 - SMITH Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) dodged a defender on the near side, dribbled the ball into the arc, and sent a shot to the far post.

54:50 - MIT -  During a fast break, Tregoning received the ball on the near side of the field. She then passed it through the arc to Mia Reilly at the far post who scored what proved to be the game-winning goal.

57:15 - MIT - On a penalty corner, Emma Majercak sent the ball to the top of the arc where Goetz fired it on goal for an insurance tally.

NOTABLE
  • Larosee's goal was her third of the season.
  • Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) bolstered the Pioneers' defense with a pair of defensive saves
  • Cornell made two saves for Smith.
  • Both teams generated 11 shots, however, the Engineers had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. MIT ended the day with a 13-7 edge in penalty corners.
  • MIT improves to 20-16 all-time against Smith.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers travel to Simmons University on Tuesday, October 2 for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Sharks.
