NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) of the Smith College basketball team notched her eighth double-double off the season and became the program's all-time leading rebounder in the Pioneers' 73-60 loss to Middlebury College Tuesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium. With the loss, Smith is now 10-5 on the year, while Middlebury improves to 14-2 overall.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Guest-Pritchett totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds to pass Marcella Zalot '87 for the record.
- Senior guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary)Â finished with 19 points, seven assists, and five steals.
- Seniors Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) each scored six points.
MIDDLEBURY HIGHLIGHTS
- Betsy Knox led the way for the Panthers with 20 points, five boards, three assists, and three blocks.
- Catherine Harrison recorded a monster double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds.
- Alex Huffman pitched in 10 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Middlebury wasted no time jumping out to a 14-2 lead before the Pioneer cut it to eight points, 17-9, by the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers increased their lead to 12 points on a three-pointer from Betsy Knox to make it 25-13 at the 8:18 mark but Smith was able to trim it to eight (33-28) on a fast break layup from Bondi before a trey from the visitors put them ahead 36-25 at halftime.
Middlebury started to pull ahead in the third and grew their margin to 17 (50-33) on a long range shot from Knox with 4:01 left in the period.Â
Smith was able to get as close as seven on a layup from McClellan with 3:26 left in the game but the Panthers were clutch down the stretch and made 12-of-14 free throws to secure the victory, 73-60.
GAME NOTES
- Smith were 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the field and just 6-of-21 (28.6) from three-point range.
- The Panthers shot 23-of-49 (46.9%) for the game and 9-of-17 (52.9) from long distance.
- Middlebury owned a 37-30 advantage in rebounds and forced 15 turnovers.
- The Pioneers drop to 4-6 all-time against Middlebury.
