NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) recorded her 1,000th career rebound in Smith's 83-59 win over visiting Coast Guard Academy Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action at Ainsworth Gymnasium. The senior forward needed five rebounds entering the matchup to register her 1,000th career rebound, and she was able to reach the milestone with a defensive board with 38 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
With the victory, Smith moves to 14-5 on the year and 7-3 in league play, while the Bears dip to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the NEWMAC.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) poured in 28 points, including six-of-seven from three-point range.
- Senior forward Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) added 14 points, three assists and two rebounds.
- Guest-Pritchett grabbed a team-high nine boards.
COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
- Kyra Hartman led the visitors with 15 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
- Emma Puddington contributed 12 points and four boards while Annabella Farabaugh finished with 12 points off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A jumper and three-pointer from Bondi kick-started the Pioneer offense early in the first quarter. Leading 11-8 at the 4:50 mark, the Pioneers closed out the opening period on a 14-3 run. The lead began to grow and a trey from senior guard Sudney Koh made it 46-19 with 4:50 remaining in the second. A Coast Guard trey with under a minute to go sent the team's into halftime with Smith ahead 50-26. Smith's hot shooting continued as a free throw from McClellan gave the home squad their largest lead of the game, 71-34, with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter. The visitors outscored the Pioneers 17-4 in the fourth for the 83-59 final.
GAME NOTES
- Guest-Pritchett makes history as the first student-athlete in program history with 1,000 career rebounds. She also becomes the first player to score 1,000 points and record 1,000 rebounds in her storied career.
- The Pioneers improve to 13-3 all-time against Coast Guard.
- Bondi has scored 20-plus points in seven games this season.
- The Pioneers 32-of-59 (55.2%) from the field and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from three-point range.
- Smith dominated the glass, holding a 36-23 advantage over the Bears.
