NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team suffered a pair of losses in Saturday's tri-match at Wheaton College. The PIoneers were topped by the host Lyons, 3-1 before a 3-0 defeat to Roger Williams. Smith drops to 3-14 overall and 0-5 in conference action.
Match 1 at Wheaton
The Lyons took the match by set scores 25-16, 24-26, 25-13, 25-18. First year
Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) totaled seven kills and six followed by senior
Claire Cicchetti's (Menlo Park, Calif./Woodside) six kills and two aces.First year
Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Pinewood International) produced 22 assists and classmate
Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) recorded 20 digs.
Match 2 vs Roger Williams
Roger Williams took the first set 25-18, leading the entire way. In the following set, RWU broke a six-all tie with an 11-6 run for a five-point lead. RWU would eventually take the set 25-17. In the third set, the Hawks rallied from a five-point deficit (11-16) with a 12-2 run en route to claiming the match with the 25-20 win.
Evgeniou led the way with 21 assists, 10 digs, and three blocks. Freeman added six kills, while Beckman and junior
Rachael Newhall (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) each finished with 11 digs.
