NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College basketball team prevailed over Mount Holyoke, 76-31, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium. This marks the eighth-consecutive victory for the Pioneers who are now 18-5 overall with an 11-3 mark in league play. The Lyons dip to 1-21 on the year with an 0-13 record against conference opponents.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) led the charge with 13 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.
- Senior forward Stephanie Foukaris (Nicosia, Cyprus/Pascal English School Nicosia) shot 4-of-6 from the field with 12 points, nine boards, three blocks and two assists.
- First-year Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra) registered 10 points and a game-high six assists.
MOUNT HOLYOKE ATHLETICS
- Annika Brooks notched a team-best 10 points and eight rebounds.
- Leah Hodges added points, four boards, and two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A three-pointer from Gleissner kickstarted the Pioneer offense and senior
Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) connected on Smith's fourth trey of the opening quarter to give Smith a 20-7 lead at the end of the first.
The lead would continue to grow as Smith shot 61.5 percent from the field in the second to go into halftime ahead 42-15.
The Pioneers outscored the visitors 18-6 in the third quarter as Guest-Pritchett finished with seven of Smith's points.
The largest lead of the game came on sophomore
Karena Garcia's (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells) jumper with 2:29 left in the fourth as Smith cruised to the 76-31 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Smith moves to 51-32 all-time against Mount Holyoke.
- Head coach Lynn Hersey is two wins away from 200 in her career and from becoming the all-time wins leader in program history.
