Softball Drops Games to Wesleyan, Bowdoin

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of games to two NESCAC opponents Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers suffered a 7-3 loss to Wesleyan and 8-0 defeat to Bowdoin. Smith's record now stands at 3-5.

GAME 1: SMITH 3 WESLEYAN 7
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) hit a double to center field, driving home Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and Jocelyn Esquer (Corona, Calif./Centennial). Two plays later, Wagner advance to third on a wild pitch, as Rachael Newhall (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) touched home plate for the 3-0 Smith advantage.
  • Wesleyan cracked the game open in the top of the fifth and never looked back.
  • With the bases loaded, a single to center field by Martina Williams brought home Kendall Mancuso, before a fielding error allowed Gaffney-Gomez to score. A wild pitch allowed Olivia Gorman to score on the next play, before JoJo Diaz and Williams crossed home plate on a throwing error, making it 5-3.
  • Three plays later, Sophia Sciarappa touched home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kendall Carr, before Campbell scored on a single to left field by Mancuso for the 7-3 final.
  • The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and third, but they were unable to plate a run.

SMITH vs WESLEYAN INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Upland School) suffered the loss for the Pioneers, allowing seven runs on seven hits over four innings.
  • Wagner went 4-4 with two RBI and a double, while Feeney and Newhall each recorded a double.

GAME 2: SMITH 0 BOWDOIN 8 (5 INNINGS)
  • Bowdoin and Smith played three scoreless innings before the Polar Bears plated a run in the fourth. Rice flew out to center, allowing Sablone to score and put Bowdoin on the board.
  • The Pioneers threatened in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded but were unable to plate a run.
  • The Polar Bears erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

SMITH vs BOWDOIN INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) (0-3) suffered the loss as she allowed six runs on five hits.
  • Wagner and Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) each collected two hits.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers will play their final games in Florida on Friday against Simpson (11:30 a.m.) and Benedictine (1:30 p.m.).
