Softball Begins NEWMAC Slate With Losses to Coast Guard

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of games to Coast Guard in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams. Smith drops to 3-9 on the year and 0-2 in league action, while Coast Guard improves to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.

GAME 1: SMITH 8 CGA 9
  • With the game tied at 1, Coast Guard scored four runs in the third to go ahead 5-1. 
  • Smith responded in their half of the inning on Jocelyn Esquer's (Corona, Calif./Centennial) triple scored three followed by Feeney's RBI double to tie the game. 
  • Both teams put up three more runs in the fifth to tie it, 8-8.
  • In the top of the sixth, Kayla Sowers' RBI double broke the tie and proved to be the game-winning run.

GAME NOTES
  • Esquer went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs.
  • Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) each went 3-for-4 at the plate. 
  • First-year Katie Wingrove (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) (0-1) took the loss in the final two innings of work.

GAME 2: SMITH 4 CGA 16
  • The Bears wasted little time, putting up 10 runs in the first inning. 
  • Smith responded as singles by Kraus and Feeney cut the lead to 10-4.
  • Coast Guard added six more runs for the 16-4 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Esquer collected two RBI, while Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii), Emma Graus, Grant, and Feeney registered hits.
  • First year Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) (0-5) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on three its in a 1/3 of an inning.
  • Smith drops to 16-26 all-time against the Bears.

UP NEXT
Smith returns to the field on Friday, March 29 when it hosts Wheaton at 3:00 p.m.
