Strong Second Half Helps Smith Defeat Eastern Connecticut, 17-11

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College lacrosse team used a 5-2 run in the final 12:32 of the second half to pull away for a 17-11 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Warriors drop to 0-3.

SMITH HIGHLGHTS
  • Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) led the Pioneers with four goals and one caused turnover.
  • Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) each Reese Gittelman (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Preparatory) tallied a hat trick.
  • Gittelman totaled seven draw controls, while Biggs and Shannon McGinnis (Levittown, Pa./The George School) added six apiece.
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) totaled eight saves.

ECSU HIGHLIGHTS
  • Alyssa Powers finished with four goals and one draw control.
  • Michelina Pinto recorded a hat trick and added an assist.
  • Goalkeeper Jessica Purick collected 19 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Alyssa Powers opened the scoring just 1:47 into the game before Gittelman responded to make it 1-1 at the 24:49 mark. Biggs and Harris each scored two goals in a span of seven minutes to take a 5-3 lead. Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing) assisted on goals from Harris and Gittelman in the final 2:11 of the half, giving Smith an 8-6 lead at the break.

The Pioneers carried the momentum into the second half as they generated two goals in the opening minutes, increasing their advantage to 10-6 with 26:40 on the clock. The teams would go back and forth over the next eight minutes before Smith went on a 4-0 run to put the game out of reach, 16-9. After two goals from the visitors, Harris capped the scoring with two seconds left to play.

GAME NOTES
  • The Pioneers begin the season 2-0 for the second consecutive year and improve to 1-0 all-time against the Warriors.
  • Smith ended the day with advantages in shots (46-21), draw controls (22-6) , and groundballs (18-15).

UP NEXT
The Pioneers will have their first road game of the season when they travel to Gordon College on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
