NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team picked up their first conference win of the season as the Pioneers defeated Clark, 5-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match Tuesday afternoon.
Smith took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as the Pioneers won at the No. 1 and 3 positions. In the top spot, 
Allison Ahern (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) and 
Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) defeated Jillian Skulsky and Maggie Tarbox 8-5, while 
Betsy Hillier (Cohasset, Mass./Concord Academy) and 
Yena Li (Shenzhen, China/Stoneleigh-Burnham School) took down Chloe Dunnell and Kathryn Benson 8-2. 
Moving on to singles action, Ahern and Kim claimed victories at the No. 1 and 2 spot to give them four points. However, Clark won at No. 3, 4, and 5 to tie the match. The final point came down to No. 6 
Betsy Hillier (Cohasset, Mass./Concord Academy) who came out on top 6-0, 6-3 to give Smith their first victory of the year.
