Softball Sweeps Non-Conference Twinbill Against Westfield State

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow/East Longmeadow) went 4-for-6 with six RBI to lead the Smith College softball team to a sweep of Westfield State in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated the Owls in game 7-1, before coming up with an 11-7 victory in game two.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game 1: Smith 7 Westfield State 1
  • Smith scored three runs in the first inning by way of a Jocelyn Esquer (Corona, Calif./Centennial) sac fly, a fielding error by second baseman and single by Kraus.
  • After a run in the third by Westfield State, Eryn Lee's (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) single in the fourth scored Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and the Pioneers added two more in the fifth for a 6-1 lead. 
  • In the sixth, Pioggia knocked in Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) to complete the scoring for Smith.
  • Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Upland School) improve to 4-3 on the year with her complete game effort, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
  • Pioggia finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Lee went 2-for-4.


Game 2: Smith 11 Westfield State 7
  • Westfield struck first in the opening inning taking the 2-0 lead. 
  • Smith responded in their half of the first with four runs  to bring the score to 4-2.
  • A three-run homerun from Sarah Meunier put the visitors ahead 5-4 in the second. 
  • The Pioneers would go on to score six runs before the Owls added two in the final two innings for the 11-7 final.
  • Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) (2-1) earned the win allowing five runs on seven hits. 
  • Jocelyn Esquer (Corona, Calif./Centennial)er went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs. 
  • Feeney finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

GAME NOTES
  • Smith improves to 16-19 all-time against Westfield State. 
  • Pioggia needs just five hits for 100 in her career.

UP NEXT
Smith will travel to Babson Park, Mass. to face NEWMAC opponent Babson in a doubleheader on Friday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
