Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Connecticut College, 15-4

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Smith College lacrosse team dropped a 15-4 decision to Connecticut College Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match. With the win, the Camels improve to 4-10 on the year, while the Pioneers fall to 8-7 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Connecticut College took control of the game right out of the gates, as Meghan Corcoran opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the contest and then found senior captain Holly Bertschmann to double the margin at the 24:39 mark. After Maddie Ryan (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) put the Pioneers on the board with 22:56 on the clock, the Camels embarked on a 6-0 run to pull away before halftime.

The Camels did not let up in the second half. Navoni tallied her first goal 41 seconds into the frame and then netted three straight in a span of 3:56 to make it 12-3 with 18:14 left. Hannah Lombard then tallied her first goal of the game at 11:10 to keep the clock running due to the 10-goal rule, and Loomis capped the scoring with back-to-back goals to produce the final outcome.

Loomis and Navoni each scored four goals to lead the way for Connecticut College, which outshot the Pioneers by a 39-22 margin and only allowed the visitors to successfully clear the ball on one-third of their attempts. Nina Fazio only had to make two saves to pick up the victory between the pipes.

Smith (8-7) got goals from four different players – Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing), Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), and Maddie Ryan (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) – and nine saves in the cage from Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) through nearly 50 minutes of action. Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Nat Schad (Madison, Wis./Verona Area), and Murray caused three turnovers apiece.

Smith will travel to Mount Holyoke on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. for a crucial NEWMAC contest where a playoff spot will be up for grabs.
