Softball Dealt Pair of Non-Conference Losses by No. 3 Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Smith College softball team's 2019 season ended with a pair of losses to No. 3 Williams Wednesday afternoon. The sweep extended the Williams win streak to 17 games and improved their overall record to 28-4. The Ephs are scheduled to play at Wesleyan Friday for a 5 p.m. contest. Smith saw its record slip to 7-27-1 overall.

GAME 1: SMITH 1 WILLIAMS 6

It was Corbett's turn to shine in the opener. The Ephs junior left-hander pitched her second seven-inning complete game of her season — and career — limiting the Pioneers to three hits while giving up a solo home run to Newhall. She walked just one and struck out one.

The Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the first only two batters in as Kim led off with a single, stole second and scored when Kipnis doubled to right. Newhall's solo home run to right-center field leading off the top of the fourth tied the game, but Williams quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of that inning. Duncan led off the frame with a double and scored when Riley Salvo lined a single to right that was misplayed, allowing her to advance to third. After an out, Jenny Hickey singled back up the middle to score Salvo for the 3-1 lead.

Williams put the game away with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Duncan had another double, Casey Pelz had a double, and Medvene-Cirigliano drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run before Kim capped the inning with a two-run single. Corbett retired Smith in order in the top of the seventh to close out the win.

Jess Flohr (5-11) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

GAME 2: SMITH 0 WILLIAMS 8

In the nightcap of the twinbill, Kirstin Mapes held the Pioneers hitless through the first 5 2/3 innings before Rachael Newhall (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) lined a clean single to left. Mapes fanned the next hitter to end the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Williams was able to score three times, invoking the eight-run mercy rule and walking away 8-0 victors. Senior Jill Jenkin ignited the rally with a lead-off double into the left-center field gap. She advanced to third prior to a walk to Jessica Kim, and Kim promptly stole second. After an out, senior Mackenzie Murphy launched a double to right-center to score the runners. Mapes was next and she lined a double down the right-field line, scoring Murphy to end the game.

The Ephs had taken a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Mara Kipnis and Murphy opened the frame with singles. After an out, Rebecca Duncan singled to load the bases. That brought up sophomore Gabi Medvene-Cirigliano, who looked a pitch before uncorking a laser to left that cleared the fence for a grand slam home run. The Ephs added a single tally in the fourth when Kim doubled to left center and eventually scored on a Murphy sacrifice fly.

Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) (0-9) gave up four runs on five hits and fanned two.
