Morrison's Double-Double Propels Basketball to Win at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - Smith College first-year forward Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) posted her first career double-double to lead the Pioneers to a 79-52 win over Wheaton Wednesday evening in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) basketball affair. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Morrison shot 8-of-11 from the field and added two assists and one steal
  • Sophomore Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra) produced 11 points, a game-high eight assists, three steals and two blocks
  • First-year Breona Martin (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary School) finished with a career-high 10 points to go along with two rebounds and two assists

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened with the two sides trading possession of the lead, with Wheaton's largest lead coming in the opening quarter courtesy of a Mikayla Pucci. Smith did just enough to take an 18-16 lead into the second quarter on Amelia Clairmont's (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) trey with under a minute to play. 

The Pioneers added 21 points to their scoring line, giving them a 39-30 advantage heading into intermission.

Smith continued to push the pace in the second half, taking its largest lead at 68-36 on a Martin layup. 

GAME NOTES
  • The Pioneers have now won six consecutive games against Wheaton and are 25-32 in the all-time series
  • Smith shot 57.4% (31-of-54) from the floor, 42.1% (8-of-19) from three-point range, and 75% (9-of-12) from the free throw line
  • Wheaton shot 36.4% (20-of-55) from the floor, 35% (7-of-20) from behind the arc, and 50% (5-of-10) at the charity stripe
  • The Pioneers held a commanding 42-21 advantage on the glass

Smith returns to action on Saturday, February 1 when it travels to Babson for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
