NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith rattled off 19 unanswered points to open the game en route to an 84-32 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action Wednesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium.Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Kyra Rideout (Hinsdale, N.H./Vermont Academy) finished with a career-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists
- Junior Elle Jo Whalen (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville High School) posted 10 points and seven boards
- Junior Karena Garcia (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells) scored 10 points with six rebounds off the bench
- The Lyons were led by Annika Brooks who recorded 12 points and seven rebounds
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Smith generated 19 straight points to open the quarter as the points shutout their opponent for the first time this season. In the opening period, the Pioneers shot 61.5% from the field.
- A three-pointer by Mikayla McEwen put Mount Holyoke on the board at the 8:06 mark of the second quarter, however, Smith went on to build a 41-10 advantage heading into halftime.
- After a 4-0 run from the visitors midway through the third period, Smith would continue its hot shooting to enter the final period ahead 60-23.
- In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers outscored Mount Holyoke, 24-9.
GAME NOTES
- Smith has won its last seven meetings against the Lyons and improves to 52-32 in the all-time series.
- The Pioneers have reached the 20-win mark for the third consecutive season.
- First-year Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) made her first collegiate start.
- Smith held a 46-18 advantage in rebounds and held the Lyons to 22.0% shooting from the field.
