Tennis Drops Spring Opener to Trinity, 9-0

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Smith College tennis team started the spring season with a 9-0 loss to Trinity College Saturday afternoon. The Bantams were a tough opponent and didn't allow a point in the six singles matchups and gave up just two points in doubles.

Ashley Felix (El Paso, Tex./Americas) vs Julia Brogan L 6-2, 6-0
Emma Essenmacher (Delran, N.J./Delran) vs Isabelle Hartman L 6-0, 6-0
Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) vs Elena Pellegrini L 6-0, 6-0

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sarah Fleming (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree) had her college debut in the number one doubles position with fellow first year Ashley Felix (El Paso, Tex./Americas). Fleming and Felix had great chemistry and created many opportunities to finish the point up at net. 
  • Ashley Felix (El Paso, Tex./Americas) maintained focus going from doubles to singles and came out swinging against Trinity's Brogan in the number one singles position. Felix showcased her ability to dictate from the baseline. It wasn't enough to get her the win, but she definitely showed a lot of potential going forward into the rest of the season. 
  • Stephanie Lopez, known for her doubles prowess, had her singles debut in the number six position. The sophomore built points patiently from the baseline and created many opportunities to come to net.

Smith returns to action March 24 at Springfield at 4:00 p.m.
