NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Smith College soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Coast Guard Tuesday evening in a hard-fought New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) battle.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers and the Bears went toe to toe but remained scoreless through the first half.
- (45:44) -Â Smith 0, USCGA 1 - In the first minute of the second half, Bears midfielder Chase Merrick scored on a strike from outside of the 18 yard box.
- (46:53) - Smith 1 USCGA 1 - The Pioneers responded quickly to the goal deficit. Defender Abby Ellis sent a long, high cross into the box where Avery Kaplan (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) was able to poke the ball free from Bears goalie Emily Scharnitzky and was then sent home to the back of the net by first-year Parker Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep).
- (50:45) Smith 1, USCGA 2 - A foul in the penalty box lead to a penalty kick scored by the Bears Anna Carleton.
GAME NOTES
- Pioneers first-year Parker Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) continues a hot-streak after scoring in her fifth consecutive match.
- Goalkeeper Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) remains near the top of the NEWMAC this season, posting an impressive .83 save percentage and facing 72 shots.
- Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain), Kelsey Cahill (Littleton, Colo./Heritage), and Aerin McQuillin all put shots on goal during the match.
