NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team picked up its fourth conference win of the season as it roared past Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium by set scored of 25-20, 25-21, 25-15.
The victory lifted Smith's record to 16-6, 4-3 on the year as the Pioneers improve to 11-2 at home this season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Olivia Smith (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) led the home squad with 10 kills which came at a .476 clipÂ
- Nathalie Pak (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) totaled 12 assists, three service aces and four digs, while Lilly Mearsheimer (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) registered 11 assists of her own
- Fiona Hegarty (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) finished with seven kills, hitting .636
- The Pioneers limited Emerson to a .163 hitting percentage on the night
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 - Smith went up 21-12 but the visitors responded with a 7-0 run to make it close. A kill from
Olivia Smith (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) allowed the Pioneers to capture the opener 25-21
Set 2 - Smith maintained a small cushion for most of the set until another kill by Smith gave the Pioneers their largest lead at 20-14. A block by
Abby Sweeney (Spring, Tex./Klein) and
Kinsey Cronin (Medford, Minn./Medford) wrapped up the set
Set 3 - The Pioneers left no doubt as they went up 16-6 which forced an Emerson timeout. Sarah Dankovih closet out the match with her second kill of the nightÂ
