NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- The Smith College turf was buzzing with energy on a sunny Saturday afternoon as Head Coach Jaime Ginsburg earned her 100th win as leader of Pioneer Field Hockey. Ginsburg's storied 15-season tenure includes an ECAC title, the program's first NEWMAC Championship in 2018 and an NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance. Ginsburg has coached players who have been recognized as All-Americans, NEWMAC All-Conference, and NFHCA DIII All-Region. Ginsburg's teams have won NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award eight years in a row and in 2018 Ginsburg and her graduate assistants were awarded Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFHCA. Congratulations, Coach! Here's to the next 100!
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Smith 0, Springfield 1 - (12:03) The Pride struck first when a pass by Gabby Inkel in front of the cage was capitalized on by Emma Robinson.
- While the score favored the Pride in the first quarter, the Pioneers kept the pressure on by getting 5 corners and 6 shots off.
- (18:33) The Pride came out of their huddle with the intention of widening their lead, only to be met with the with the force that is Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) in front of the cage. When Springfield was unable take advantage of a player-up situation following a Gwen Tuckett (Cambridge, Mass./Dana Hall School) green card, the Pioneers decided to get busy.
- Smith 1, Springfield 1 - (21:23) Emily Kehoe (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton Harmon) sent a nice pass where Grace Moorhead (Cranston, R.I./The Wheeler School) was waiting to flip it in passed the Pride's goalkeeper and even the score for the Pioneers.
- Smith 2, Springfield 1 - (25:25) The go-ahead goal for the Pioneers started with a long ball sent up the field by Eva Kinnel (Newtown, Penn./George School) found the stick of forward Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) who dribbled her way into the circle and had a rip from the edges that hit the board with pace.
- Smith 3, Springfield 1 (26:09) - Moments later Guimond once again showed how dangerous she can when the ball gets near her.
- Smith 4, Springfield 1 (27:09) - Keeping the momentum in their favor, Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) was able to break through the Pride defense and found herself in a 1v1 with the Pride Goalie Lyndsey DeLasho. Before Galuski was able to get a shot off, the keeper committed a hard foul earning Smith a Penalty Stroke. Laura Dreher (Durham, N.H./Durham) who often inserts Smith's corners stepped up to the dot and cleanly delivered another goal for the Pioneers.
- Smith 5, Springfield 1 (52:04) - After a scoreless third quarter Emily Kehoe (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton Harmon) dribbled from the 30 yard line and finished the job herself to seal the Pride's fate.
GAME NOTES
- The Pioneers dominated the fourth quarter, holding an 11-0 shot advantage over the Pride.
- Guimond had one of her best games of the season, producing season highs in shots (6), shots on goal (4), and goals scored (2) in a single game.
- With the win over Springfield, the Pioneers keep their NEWMAC playoff hopes alive.
