NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team began the 2021 fall season by edging Nichols 5-4 Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Smith took one of three doubles matches to begin the contest. First years Lili Goshgarian and Clara Goshgarian captured the first point and would go up 7-3. Clara's fantastic service game secured the 8-3 win.
• The sophomore duo of Jennifer Fan () and Miranda Gibson faced a tough pair at the No. 2 slot and would fall 8-1.
• In the third slot, Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) and Ashley Felix went down 3-7 early but battled back to make it 6-7 with a chance to even the score. The pair would eventually drop the 8-6 decision.
• The Pioneers won four of six singles matches to defeat Nichols 5-4. The first singles win came from Lili Goshgarian at No. 3 who showed off her offensive style of play and her ability to close at the net, earning her the 6-1, 6-1 win.
• At the No. 4 position, Clara Goshgarian won 6-4, 6-0, while Miranda Gibson fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
• In the number 5 slot, Alexa Monos secured a 6-2, 6-1 win to tie the match, 4-4 with No. singles left to play.
• Felix would deliver the victory for the Pioneers, beating her opponent 6-2, 6-2.

Smith will travel to Simmons University on Wednesday, September 29 for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.
