Smith Soccer Opens NEWMAC Play with 3-1 Victory Over WPI

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- The Smith College soccer team opened NEWMAC play with a 3-1 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- 21st Minute (20:50): Smith 1 WPI 0 - A Smith free position in their attacking third set up sophomore Madelyn Boyle (Milford, Mass./Milford) for a corner kick which found the corner of the cage with precision and gave Smith the lead.

- 35th Minute (34:30): Smith 1 WPI 1 - WPI's Olivia Toolin settled the score with an unassisted goal from the top of the penalty box after a quick transition up the field by WPI.

- 41st Minute (40:29) Sophomore Avery Kaplan (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) gave Smith back the advantage with a header in front of the net coming off a long assist from sophomore teammate Abbie Ellis (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry)
- Battling for possession off of a throw in, Smith sophomore Natalie Dionne (Brooklyn, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) dribbled into the box through the WPI defense and drilled the ball passed the near post.

GAME NOTES

  • Goalkeeper Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) made a season high six saves and fended off 10 corner kicks.
  • WPI outshot Smith 22-8 offensively but was not able to convert their chances.
  • Sophomore Madelyn Boyle (Milford, Mass./Milford) scored her first career goal for the Pioneers.
  • This was Smith's first victory over WPI since 2015 as Smith improves to 1-0 in the NEWMAC

The Pioneers will take on Western New England University on Tuesday, September 21 at 4p.m. for a non-conference match.
