WORCESTER, Mass.- The Smith College field hockey team's offense showed up in a flurry to propel the team to a 2-1 victory over Clark University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers' defense started the match with a fortified stand, defending four corners and five shots by Clark in the first five minutes of play.
- Smith 1, Clark 0 - With just 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Junior Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) found the ball after a muddle in front of the cage and scored her second goal of the season.
- Smith 1, Clark 1 - After a scoreless second quarter, Clark's Rebecca Murphy tipped the ball into the goal after a save by Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) in the 42nd minute of play.
- Smith 2, Clark 1 - Junior Grace Moorhead (Cranston, R.I./The Wheeler School) connected and scored from a penalty corner after the Pioneer offense began the fourth quarter battering the Cougar defense with a flurry of shots.
GAME NOTES
- The Pioneer offense exploded with 24 shots, 18 of which were on target, compared to only 5 shots on goal by Clark.
- Smith had 14 total penalty corners including 6 in the second period.
- Seven different Pioneers put shots on goal throughout the game, sophomore Laura Dreher (Durham, N.H./Durham) put all four of her shots on target.
