Volleyball Prevails Over Wellesley 3-0

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, MASS. - The Smith College volleyball team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wellesley College, 3-0, on Tuesday evening. The scores in favor of the Pioneers were 25-19, 25-15, 25-22. The Pioneers improve to 18-7 and 4-4 in league action while the Blue drop to 7-13 and 0-8 in conference play on the season. 

Highlights
  • The Pioneers began the first set with an 8-4 lead until both teams traded in back-and-forth play to reduce the margin to 13-11
  • Smith continued to pull away with a short 4-1 run to increase their advantage to 17-12
  • Wellesley attempted to reduce the disadvantage until the Pioneers in the lead 21-18 finished the set with a 4-1 run to take the set 25-19
  • Smith jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, which they kept throughout the set, capped off by a 5-1 rally to win the set 25-15
  • The final frame was the closest of the evening as the Pioneers held a 15-7 advantage until Wellesley 6-1 run to decrease the margin to 16-13
  • Smith continued to pull away with a 4-1 rally until the Blue responded with a 5-0 run bringing the score to a close 20-19 with the Pioneers holding the slight edge
  • Ultimately Smith held Wellesley off finishing the set 25-22 and claiming the 3-0 victory

Notes
  • Mia Moscicki (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) led the Smith offense by recording a match-high 11 kills 
  • Sophia Padilla (Fontana, CA/Saint Lucy's Priory) finished the game with 33 assists while Pioneers libero Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) totaled 10 digs
  • The Pioneers hit .372 for the match
  • The victory marks the first time Smith defeated Wellesley since 2005

Up Next
The Pioneers travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to compete in the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22. Smith goes head to head with York College of Pennsylvania on Friday at 4:30 pm and then on Saturday competes with No. 2 Juniata at 11 am and Carnegie Mellon at 4 pm.
