Box Score HUNTINGDON, PA. - The Smith College volleyball team opened competition in the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College by topping York College of Pennsylvania in a exhilarating five-set match on Friday evening. The scores in favor of the Pioneers were 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12.
Smith improves to 19-7 with the win while the Spartans drop to 10-12 on the season.
Highlights
- The first set was extremely close as neither team held more than a four-point advantage in the entire round
- The Pioneers were able to hold off the Spartans, claiming the set 25-21
- The second set was also a close battle until York pulled away after being in a slight 10-9 disadvantage by recording a 8-1 run to hold a 17-11 edge
- With the Spartans in the lead 22-14, the Pioneers responded with a 9-2 run to reduce their margin to 24-23
- Ultimately York claimed the second set 25-23
- In the third set Smith jumped out with an early 13-7 lead which they kept for the rest of the set
- The fourth set saw the Pioneers begin with an early lead until the Spartans produced a 10-2 run to take the lead 17-14
- Smith reclaimed the lead with a 6-2 run until York six straight points to take the set 20-25
- During the final frame the Pioneers pulled away with an early 9-3 advantage until the Spartans slowly worked to catch up to Smith
- Ultimately the Pioneers held off York concluding the set 15-12 and taking the 3-2 victory

- Abby Hunt (Mandeville, La./Fontainebleau) led the Pioneers attack by posting a match-high 14 kills
- Sophia Padilla (Fontana, CA/Saint Lucy's Priory) totaled 34 assists while Smith libero Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) notched a career-high 29 digs
- Ava Zollinger (Orlando, FL/Lake Highland Prep) () took charge of the Pioneers defense recording seven blocks in the match
- Smith hit .177 for the match
