Late Stroke Dooms Field Hockey at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Caroline Werner scored the only goal of the game after being granted a penalty stroke with 45 seconds remaining on the clock as Union College defeated Smith College, 1-0, in a non-conference battle on Wednesday evening. 

With the outcome, Smith drops to 8-9 overall while Union moves to 11-5 on the season.

Game Notes
  • Union kept the ball on the offensive side for most of the first quarter as they were granted two penalty shots and recorded five shots on goal
  • Smith put up a strong defense as goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) notched five saves in the first period
  • Kyleigh Poot (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) also put up a strong performance on the defensive side as she prevented a goal from Caroline Werner posting a defensive save
  • The Pioneers continued to hold off the Dutchwomen in the second quarter as they only recorded one shot on goal while Smith posted a pair of shots 
  • Union continued to put the pressure on the Pioneers as they were granted three corners in the third period
  • Smith was able to prevent the Dutchwomen from attempting a shot after both of the final two corners of the quarter
  • In the final frame, the Pioneers continued to keep Union out of the net as Harper notched two saves
  • Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) put up a strong fight for Smith as she kept a shot from Jill Bove out of the goal for a defensive save
  • With 45 seconds remaining in the game, Union was granted a penalty stroke taken by Caroline Werner that went past Harper to score a goal for the Dutchwomen
  • Harper finished the game with nine saves 
  • Union held a 16-4 advantage in shots while also recording an 11-1 edge in penalty corners
