NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision as it fell to WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium. The scores in favor of the Engineers were 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 18-25. WPI improves to 8-6 on the year and 2-5 in league action, while the Pioneers fall to 13-6, 3-3.
Highlights
- The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-7 lead and maintained the advantage until WPI put together a 7-0 run to go ahead 17-16
- With Smith up 23-22, the visitors scored the final three points of the set capped off by a service ace from Jia Yazon
- The Engineers took a 2-0 lead after the second stanza, hitting .355
- Tied at 10-10 in the third set, Smith went on a 6-1 run to go up 16-11 and take the set 25-20
- The final frame saw WPI jump out to a 9-3 lead, which they kept throughout
- Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, MN/South High Minneapolis) paced Smith with 10 kills, followed by nine from Ava Zollinger (Orlando, FL/Lake Highland Prep)
- Sophia Padilla (Fontana, CA/Saint Lucy's Priory) tallied 20 assists, while Sarah Dankovich (El Paso, TX/Coronado) finished with 13 digs
- The Pioneers hit just .100 for the match
