Box Score NORTHAMPTON, MASS. - The Smith College field hockey team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wellesley College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 7-5 and 4-1 in league action while the Blue fall to 5-7 and 2-2 in conference play on the season.

- It was a busy first quarter for the Pioneers defense as Smith goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) recorded four saves
- On the offensive side, Smith was granted two corners and posted three shots but were unable to find the back of the net
- Both teams had an aggressive offense in the second period as the Pioneers produced five shots (three on goal) while Wellesley posted five where Harper notched four saves
- Under three minutes into the third quarter, Smith controlled the ball into the circle where Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) attempted a shot saved by the Wellesley goalkeeper
- With the Blue goalie unable to gain control of the ball, Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) snatched the ball and sent it in the defenseless goal to score the first point of the game
- The Pioneers fought hard to improve their edge, receiving three corners as Mellow attempted to post a second goal of the game but was stopped by the Wellesley goalkeeper
- During the final frame, Wellesley brought an aggressive offense as they recorded four shots
- Ultimately Smith defense kept the Blue out of the goal, blocking three shots and Harper posted a save on the final shot

- Smith goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) recorded 10 saves in the win
- The Pioneers and Blue both recorded 14 shots, but Smith held the advantage posting 10 shots on goal compared to Wellesley's nine
