BRUNSWICK, ME - The seventh-ranked Smith College basketball program earned a hard-fought 66-60 overtime win over Maine Maritime Friday evening in the Coastal Classic hosted by Bowdoin College.Â
Nationally-ranked Smith improves to 3-0, while Maine Maritime (2-1) drops its first game of the season.Â
Highlights
- Trailing 8-5, Smith orchestrated a 10-0 run with six points from Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) to pull ahead 15-8 with 1:23 remaining in the quarter. The Mariners scored back-to-back buckets with under a minute to go to make it 15-12 at the end of the quarter.
- Smith found its largest lead of the half, 21-14, on a layup from Morison at the 6:50 mark but Maine Maritime would close out the half on a 16-4 run, to head into halftime ahead 30-25.
- The Pioneers continued to struggle shooting from the field and the Mariners maintained a cushion throughout the quarter as Smith trailed 43-36 going to the fourth.Â
- Lauren Plissey's three-point play gave MMA its largest lead of the game, 46-36, with 9:36 remaining in the stanza. The Pioneers began to chip away and tied the game at 46-46 with 7:08 on the clock. The Mariners were up 57-53 with 2:16 to go when a layup by Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) and two free throws from Pickunka sent the game to overtime.
- Erianna Moore drove in for the layup on the opening possession but from then on, it was all Pioneers as Smith outscored its opponent 9-1 in the extra period thanks to a 4-of-4 effort from Pickunka at the free throw line.
Inside the Numbers
- Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds
- Amelia Clairmont(Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School)Â added 14 points and made all four of Smith's three-pointers on the night
- Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) recorded her second double-double of the year to finish with 13 points and 11 rebounds on 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line
- The Pioneers shot 32.4Â percent (23-of-71)Â from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point range, and 88.9Â percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line.Â
- The Mariners shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57)Â from the field, 30.8 percent (4-of-13Â from behind the arc, and 51.7 percent (8-of-14) at the charity stripe.
