Yamada's Career-High Propels Smith Past UMass Dartmouth, 78-58

NORTHAMPTON - Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) knocked down eight three-pointers and registered a career-high 28 points as No. 11 Smith College ran past UMass Dartmouth, 78-58- on day two of the Smith Holiday Classic inside Ainsworth Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who are ranked No. 11 in the latest D3hoops.com Poll, head into the new year with a 10-1 record. The Corsairs drop to 5-6 overall.

Game Highlights
  • Tied 11-11 with 5:40 on the clock, Yamada and Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) hit back-to-back three-pointers to kickstart a 20-2 run by Smith which resulted in a 31-13 lead at the end of the first
  • Yamada would drill two more threes in the second as the Pioneers held a commanding 44-29 advantage at the half
  • The Corsairs chipped away and came to within 19 (49-39) on a layup by Kaylin Zalewski with 7:39 remaining in the third, but an 8-0 run stretched the lead to 18 (57-39) late in the third
  • Smith's edge grew to as large as 23 on Morgan Morrison's (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) three-point play early in the fourth as Smith maintained a comfortable margin throughout the final period

  • Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after matching her career-high with 24 points to go along with 16 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year
  • Yamada's eight three-pointers only trails the single game record of 10 set by Lauren Bondi in 2018
  • Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra) led the team with six assists
  • Smith shot 43.5% (30-of-69) from the field, 36.7% (11-of-30) from three-point range and 53.8% (7-of-13) from the free-throw line
  • The Corsairs shot 37.7% (23-of-61) from the floor, 25.9% (7-of-27) from three-point range and 55.6% (5-of-9) from the charity stripe
