Lacrosse Falls to Worcester State in Season Opener, 12-4

WORCESTER, Mass. - Competing for the first time in more than 700 days, the Smith College lacrosse team fell to Worcester State, 12-4, Wednesday evening. The Pioneers begin the year 0-1, while the Lancers start out 1-0.

  • Smith had goals from four different scorers: Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley), Reese Gittelman (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Preparatory), Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont), and Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge)
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) ended with 16 saves
  • Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass./Weston) led the team in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (2)
  • The Lancers held a 47-25 advantage in shots throughout the contest

Worcester State took a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the contest on a tally from Lauzon but the Pioneers responded quickly with a goal from Havlick to tie the game at 1-1. 

Throughout the remainder of the first quarter and start of the second, the Lancers added five more goals to take a 6-1 lead with 6:13 remaining in the period. Gittelman found the back of the net on an assist from Havlick and Worester State scored once more to go into the break ahead 6-2. 

Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) cut the deficit to 9-4 with under a minute left in the quarter but the Lancers answered in the final seconds. Worcester State went on to score two more in the fourth quarter to make it a final score of 12-4.
