NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Smith College basketball team defeated Coast Guard, 87-57, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Smith, who ranked No. 20 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III National Coaches Poll, improves to 17-2 with a 6-0 record in conference play. Coast Guard drops to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.
Inside the Numbers
- Leading the way for Smith was Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) who finished with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four from long distance
- Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) added 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench
- Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra) poured in six points, five rebounds, five steals and five assists
- Smith was 30 of 59 (50.8 percent) and connected on eight of 19 from downtown
How it Happened
Smith scored 10 straight in the first quarter to take a 19-8 lead with 1:44 left in the quarter and the Pioneers led 24-12 after one and 42-31 at halftime.
Smith would close the third quarter on a 15-4 run expanding the lead to 63-43 and use a 10-2 spurt to start the fourth to put the game away leading 73-45 with 8:47 left.
