NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team played their second match of the season Saturday against Trinity.
Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) got the lone win for the Pioneers who fell to the Bantams, 8-1.
Doubles
- In the number one position, Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) quickly got a 3-0 lead against the Bantams. The pair of Hartman and Shyltsyna worked to disrupt their rhythm and the Goshgarians were able to adjust quickly, play some creative tennis, and transition to the varying style of play. With the adjustments, the match stayed close, until at 6-6 the Bantams were able to secure the last two games getting the win.Â
- In the number three position, Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) and Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) played solid doubles, holding serve and putting pressure on their opponents. The teams were exchanging holds of serve when the Pioneers got the break to go up 7-6. The duo of Baker and White managed to break back forcing a set tie-break. After a close tie-break, the Bantams secured the match leading to 3-0 sweep in doubles.Â
SinglesÂ
- After a close doubles match, Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) played another tight match in the number 5 position. Playing a tough opponent, O. Monos stayed steady both mentally and strategically to disrupt her opponent's play. After dropping the first set, Olivia jumped to a lead in the second. Baker was able to battle her way back to get the match to 5-5. Olivia continued to play solid tennis, but her opponent was able to up her level to secure the second set and the match.Â
- The win of the day came in the number 6 position. Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy), in her first match of the season, played strategic tennis to keep her opponent on the move and uncomfortable. Gibson and her opponent battled through the first set going to a set tie-break. In the tie-break, Miranda hardly gave her opponent an inch, only dropping one point to win the tiebreak 7-1. In the second set, Miranda continued to move her opponent and created opportunities for herself to finish the point. Miranda quickly took the second set 6-2 and earned the win.Â
