ONEONTA, NY - The Smith College lacrosse program fought its way to a 12-9 non-conference victory over Hartwick College on a chilly Tuesday evening. The Pioneers improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Hawks dip to 3-3.

- Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge)Â produced four goals, one assist and two ground balls
- Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) each registered two scored
- Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass./Weston) scooped up 12 ground balls and won 15 draws for the Pioneers
- Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) made 11 saves in the win
How it Happened
Hartwick got on the board first but the Pioneers responded with three unanswered goals by
Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley),
Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Reese Gittelmen to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
Just two goals were scored in the second, one by each team, to send the teams to the locker room with the score 4-2 in favor of Smith.
The Pioneers came out strong in the third quarter as
Bella DeAngelo (Portsmouth, RI/Moses Brown School),
Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and
Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge)Â gave Smith a 7-2 advantage. Hartwick responded with two goals but
Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) would find the back of the net to make it 9-5 entering the fourth.Â

The Hawks rallied to pull within two, 11-9, with 4:06 remaining but
Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) added an insurance goal and the Smith defense held strong to preserve the 12-9 final.
