Coast Guard Finishes Strong Against Lacrosse, 16-12

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Coast Guard Academy used a 4-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull ahead for a 16-12 win over Smith College lacrosse Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the Bears improve to 9-4, 5-1 NEWMAC.

Top Performers
  • Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored a team-high four goals to lead the Pioneers
  • Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) added three, while Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Stella Alphas (Weston, Mass./Weston) each tallied two goals
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) made 10 stops in the loss
How it Happened
Gianna Cascio scored the opening goal of the game for the Bears before Tschider and Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) went back-to-back- for Smith to go up 2-1. Coast Guard responded with a 3-0 run spanning two minutes and the Arancio's would each find the back of the net to tie the game at 4-4 going into the second quarter.

Trailing 8-5, Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Alphas added two for the Pioneers to pull within one, 8-7, at the half.

CGA came out strong in the third with three goals to put them up 11-7. Smith as able to cut the deficit to 12-9 heading into the final period.

The Arancio's opened the fourth with a goal apiece, however, the Bears sealed the win with a 4-0 run to go up 16-11.
