NORTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team fell to Wheaton College in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader this afternoon on the Clark Softball Field. The Lyons walked off with a 3-2 game one victory, before earning the sweep with a 5-1 win in the nightcap. Wheaton improves to 15-11 overall and 6-4 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 9-16 and 4-6.
Game 1: Smith 2 Wheaton 3
- Smith scored two runs in the top of the third to break into the scoring column and take a 2-0 margin. Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) struck a single up the middle and Ang followed with a two-run double to center to give Smith a 2-0 margin
- Wheaton scored twice in the fifth to tie the contest and once in the seventh to win it
- Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) (1-4) was credited with the loss for Smith after giving up a run on three hits and a walk to go with a strikeout
- Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) went 1-for-3 with two RBI
Game 2: Smith 1 Wheaton 5
- Smith got on the board in the top of the first on Piper Corey's (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) RBI double scored Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville)
- The Lyons knocked out 14 hits and scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good, before adding single runs in the second, fourth and fifth frames
- Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) (3-6) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in a third of an inning
- Corey and Claire Lord (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin Scool) were the only Pioneers to record hits for Smith
