NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Smith College softball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated the Bears, 6-2, in game one, before falling 9-5 in the second game.
With the split, Smith is now 5-9 on the year and 1-1 in conference play, while the Bears move to 4-4 with a 1-1 record against league foes.
Game 1: Smith 6 CGA 2
- Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI double and added a homerun in the fourth to go ahead 2-0
- Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) tripled to right field, scoring Kiera Collins-Joseph (Arlington, Va./Wakefield), Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy), and Emma Silvera (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) in the fifth
- The Pioneers added two more runs in the fifth and Ang launched her first career homerun to lock up game one
- Maegan Osmond (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) earned the win, allowing five hits with three strikeouts
- Ang and Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) each finished with two hits
Game 2: Smith 5 CGA 9
- Tied at 2-2, Smith added three runs in the fifth highlighted by Piper Corey's (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) two RBI single
- The Bears would take advantage of Smith errors and go on to score seven runs over the final three innings
- Smith's Luc Helms allowed six runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts
