MIT Rolls Past Smith on Senior Day

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - MIT combined for 22 runs on 26 hits to defeat Smith College in a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers fall to 10-19 overall and 5-9 in the conference and the Engineers improve to 22-11 and 11-3 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Smith 0 MIT 8

  • Katia Pendowski's homerun in the top of the first gave MIT a four run lead and the visitors added runs in the following four innings for the 8-0 final.
  • Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) and Meredith Moore (Caro, Mich./Caro) each recorded a hit
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) made the start for Smith going 3.0 innings and was replaced by Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who pitched the final 2.0 innings


Game 2: Smith 1 MIT 14

  • Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) took the loss after allowing six runs in 2.2 innings of work
  • Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) scored Smith's only run on a fielding error by the Engineers
  • MIT put together a six-run third and five-run fifth for the 14-1 final

The Pioneers will head to Connecticut for a doubleheader at Trinity on Wednesday, April 27 at 3:00pm.
