Softball Takes Opener Against Clark

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith softball team cruised to a 9-1 win over Clark in the opening game before a 6-5 loss in the nightcap on Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

The Pioneers improve to 12-21 overall and 6-10 in league play, while the Cougars are now 6-16, 2-14.

Game 1: Smith 9 Clark 1 - 5 Innings
  • Smith went ahead with three runs in the top of the first. Juno Shantz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) and Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) each recorded an RBI and Lee scored on an error by the Clark defense
  • In the second, Molly Taketa (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) put Smith up 4-0 on a home run to left field
  • Clark made it a 4-1 game in the third but the Smith bats would continue to stay hot. 
  • Smith ended the game in the fifth on Taylor Ang's (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) sac fly which scored Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors)
  • The Pioneers collected 12 hits in the opening game
  • Lucy Helms (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) earned the win and finished with a career-high nine strikeouts
  • Lee finished with two hits and three RBI
Game 2: Smith 5 Clark 6
  • In a back and forth affair, Clark outhit the Pioneers 15-11
  • Each team put two on the board in the first inning before Taketa and Lee recorded RBI singles in the second to go ahead 4-2
  • The Cougars responded with a three run third inning
  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single to left which scored Cory
  • Clark would take the lead for good in the sixth as Kaylee Gibson singled to left
  • Taketa went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI
  • Abigail Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) took the loss, allowing one run on six hits in 2.1 innings of work

Smith will close out their season with a doubleheader at Emerson on Saturday beginning at 12:00pm.
