WORCESTER -
Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) notched her seventh double-double of the year as the Smith College basketball team rolled past Clark University, 64-36, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) basketball game Saturday afternoon.
The fifth-ranked Pioneers improve to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Cougars are now 9-9 on the year with an 0-3 mark in the NEWMAC.
Game Highlights
- Smith opened the game on a 12-4 run and the Cougars scored the final four points of the quarter as the Pioneers took a 21-8 lead into the second.
- The Cougars held Smith scoreless over the first 4:34 of the second quarter as Clark trailed 21-12 with 5:27 to go in the second.
- The Pioneers then ended the half on a 7-4 run to lead 28-16 at the half
- The Smith offense came alive in the third as they outscored the Cougars 22-6, with nine coming from Morrison, to hold a 50-22 advantage going into the fourth
- The Cougars played Smith even in the fourth quarter as each team scored 14 points
By the Numbers
- Morrison finished 11-of-17 from the field with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks
- Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, Calif./Serra) dished out a game-high 10 assists and recorded three steals
- Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire), Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) and Cassidy Creager (Fairview, PA/Villa Maria Academy) each chipped in six points
- The Pioneers shot 42.9% (27-of-63) from the floor, 25.0% (5-of-20) from behind the arc, and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) at the charity stripe
- Clark shot 22.7% (15-of-66) from the floor, 0-for-10 from three-point range, and 46.2% (6-of-13) from the free throw line
