NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Smith College volleyball team cruised past New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Salve Regina, 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-16), on Tuesday evening.
The Pioneers improve to 13-7 and 5-1 in conference play while the Seahawks drop to 10-9 and 0-6.
Highlights
- Salve Regina began the first set of the evening with a slight 13-10 advantage over Smith
- The Pioneers recorded eight of the next nine points to clinch the lead 18-14 capped off with a kill by Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein)
- Both teams exchanged points until a final kill by Sweeney captured the 25-22 victory for Smith
- The Pioneers began the second set with a 9-6 lead over Salve
- Smith followed with six unanswered points to increase the edge to 15-6
- The Seahawks attempted to close the gap but a final four-point surge from the Pioneers notched the second set 25-13 for Smith
- With the Pioneers behind 5-2 in the final frame, the team recorded a seven-point run to claim the lead 9-5
- Smith continued to pull away holding an impressive 22-11 advantage over Salve
- The Seahawks were able to tally five more points in the remainder of the set but the Pioneers finished the set with a 25-16 win securing the 3-0 victory

- Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) led the Pioneer offense with a season-high 12 kills (.800) while also recording a season-best five blocks
- Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) totaled 17 assists and 13 digs while Ruby Woodward (Winchester, MA/Winchester) posted 10 digs for Smith
- The Pioneers averaged a hitting percentage of .229
