Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Emerson

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Smith College volleyball team fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Emerson, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 11-25, 23-25) on Tuesday evening. 

The Pioneers drop to 14-9 and 5-3 in conference play while the Lions improve to 11-7 and 3-5 in league action. 

Highlights
  • With Emerson in the lead at 12-8, the Pioneers recorded a four-point run to tie the Lions 12-12
  • Emerson recorded seven of the next nine points to increase the edge to 19-14
  • A final push for the Lions clinched the first set 25-22 
  • Smith began the second set with a slight 10-8 advantage over Emerson
  • The Pioneers delivered seven of the next nine points to increase the margin to 17-10
  • Smith continued their aggressive offense scoring the remainder of the points with six kills and two aces to secure the second set 25-15
  • Emerson jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third frame 
  • The Pioneers attempted to close the gap reducing the margin to 10-7 
  • Emerson pulled ahead finishing the set with a seven-point run and claiming the 25-11 victory
  • Smith began the fourth set with a five-point run capped off with a kill by Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein)
  • The Pioneers were able to maintain a slight edge over the Lions until a four-point run allowed Emerson to take the lead 23-21
  • A final push from the Lions concluded the frame 25-23 and the match 3-1

  • Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) led the Pioneer offense with 13 kills (.219)
  • Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) produced a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs 
  • Leading Smith in assists was Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) with 26 while Ruby Woodward (Winchester, MA/Winchester) added 13 
  • Libero Ruth Tullis (Edmond, OK/Oklahoma Christian School) posted 18 digs while Ari Cross (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) notched 13 
  • The Pioneers finished the night hitting .209
