Volleyball Prevails Over Trinity in a Five-Set Thriller

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Smith College volleyball team prevailed in a gritty 3-2 (26-28, 25-14, 18-25, 25-20, 16-14) victory over Trinity on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers improve to 15-9 on the season while the Bantams drop to 13-6.

Highlights
  • Trinity jumped out to an early 14-5 lead in the first set of the night
  • The Pioneers closed the gap with several short runs to tie the Bantams at 24-24
  • A kill by Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) brought Smith to set point at 26-25 but a final three-point push allowed Trinity to take the first set 28-26
  • The Pioneers held a slight 7-6 edge before posting a six-point run to increase the advantage to 13-6
  • Trinity attempted to close the gap reducing the margin to 18-14
  • Smith responded with seven unanswered points capped off with an ace from Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) to secure the second set 25-14 for the Pioneers
  • The two teams exchanged points in back-and-forth play until Trinity posted a six-point run to increase the edge to 12-5
  • The Bantams continued to pull away finishing the third set with a 25-18 victory
  • Tied at 13-13 in the fourth frame, the Pioneers recorded the next five points to take the lead 18-13
  • Trinity came within striking distance of Smith only trailing by one point at 20-19 
  • Smith posted five of the next six points to claim the victory in the fourth set 25-20
  • Trailing by one point 9-8 in the fifth frame, Trinity notched a five-point run to pull ahead 13-9
  • The Pioneers did not let that determine the fate of the night producing a 7-1 run to claim the victory 16-14 and the match 3-2

  • First-year Mia Etheridge (Half Moon Bay, CA/Half Moon Bay) delivered a career-high 19 kills (.265) while Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) recorded 13 (.385) 
  • Meg Hopkins (Matthews, NC/Covenant Day School) posted 31 assists for the Pioneers while Nathalie Pak (Lexington, MA/Lexington) added 21
  • Leading Smith in digs was Gabby Beckman (Berthoud, CO/Grandview) with 18 while Addison Klunder (Los Angeles, CA/The Buckley School) posted 12
  • Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) notched a double-double with 11 kills (.333) and 10 digs 
  • Sweeney also produced a career-high seven blocks for Smith
  • The Pioneers finished the night hitting .252
