Field Hockey Wins OT Thriller Over Wheaton, 4-3

NORTHAMPTON - Callahan Day (Shade Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored with 1:41 left in overtime to give the Smith College field hockey team a 4-3 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wheaton College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers (8-10, 5-4) earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament and will host Springfield College in a NEWMAC first round matchup Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00pm. The Lyons season comes to an end with an overall record of 6-13 and league mark of 2-7. 

Game Highlights
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Delia Knox found Riley Levrault to give the visitors an early lead at the 17:29 mark
  • Smith had an opportunity to tie the game when they were awarded a penalty stroke but Laura Dreher's (Durham, NH/Durham) shot was saved and deflected wide
  • The Pioneers tied the game on Annie Wimsatt's (Westerville, OH/Columbus Academy) shot off a corner feed from Dreher
  • The Lyons wasted no time and went ahead once again thanks to Knox
  • Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Dreher took control and scored back-to-back goals in less than four minutes to put Smith ahead 3-2
  • With less than 1:30 remaining in the game, Wheaton's Macey Poitras-Cote buried her penalty stroke attempt to send the game to overtime
  • On a fastbreak with under two minutes on the clock, Caroline McShea (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) slipped the ball to Day who beat the goalie for the game-winner
Inside the Numbers
  • Goalkeeper Abby Halpin (Pine Bush, NY/Kent School) made four saves while Emma Lapreziosa was impressive all afternoon, stopping 18 shots
  • Smith led the way in shots (25-8), shots on goal (22-7) and penalty corners (7-3)
  • The Pioneers' last OT game was a 2-1 win over Wheaton last season

The NEWMAC Field Hockey Tournament begins on Tuesday, October 31 where No. 4 Smith will host No. 5 Springfield at 7:00pm. In the other first round matchup, No. 3 WPI hosts No. 6 Wellesley.
